DMZ launches environmental transformation of its business

Dnipro Metallurgical Plant (DMZ, Dnipro) — a member of DCH Steel — has presented a comprehensive modernization strategy under the European Green Deal. The key stages involve the construction of an electric arc furnace complex (EAFC) along with transition to renewable energy sources. The complete shutdown of the company’s by-product coke facilities is also envisaged. This is the company’s strategic initiative intended to decarbonize production and support Ukraine’s energy sustainability.

As part of its new ‘green’ strategy, DMZ is considering the upgrade to the capacities of Rolling Shop 2 (Mill 550), construction of a solar power plant (SPP) or development of other types of green energy. Along with the EAFC construction, this will enable the manufacture of metal products that meet both the environmental standards of the European Union and the provisions of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The solar power plant design provides for the application of state-of-the-art high-efficiency bifacial solar panels. This equipment is capable of converting into electricity both direct solar radiation and the one reflected from the earth’s surface. The plant’s area is about 40 hectares, the projected generation is about 40 GW/h with an installed capacity of 30 MW. Investments in the project will amount to about $15 million. The site will cover the area of the company’s decommissioned by-product coke facilities.

‘On 13 May, the company’s by-product coke facilities, where the scheduled construction of renewable energy sources will be based, was completely shut down. The EAFC construction, in turn, is already at the design stage. Overall, we regard these initiatives as an important step in our company’s environmental transformation. The development of green energy facilities and the transition to electric arc furnace production contribute to the future of sustainable metallurgy and DMZ’s higher competitiveness against the present-day challenges,’ noted Vitalii Bash, CEO of DMZ.
