Since December 1, 2010 the old terminal of International airport “Kharkiv” has been closed for restoration. From this day the international service will start in the new terminal. This to the Information Centre "Ukraine-2012" said the Director General of IA Kharkiv construction Aleksandr Syvalnyov.
According to the project, after restoring the terminal should preserve the historical look. At the time of Euro 2012 it will work as VIP-terminal with a capacity of 250 passengers per hour. "We will rebuild the ruined parts and we`ll make them most like they were in 50-ies" - he said.
According to Mr. Syvalnyov, now, work on the project of restoration of the terminal, which by the end of the year should be proved by the relevant authorities, continues. Most of work on restoration will begin in early spring next year and expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
Kharkiv airport terminal was built in the postwar years by a typical project developed by the Moscow Research Institute Aeroproekt in 1951.
Outside the terminal building is festive, specific to the "Stalinist" architecture of 30's - 50's. The central entrance is decorated with eight-column terrace with high parapet. The graceful octagonal tower rises above the building with a slender spire tent and topped with gilt wreath. The interiors are equipped with molded architectural details and murals.
Recall that during Euro 2012 in IA Kharkiv there will be working three terminals that will provide capacity in 2500 passengers/hr: the main one (1300 passengers/hr), divided into two areas (for domestic and international flights), VIP-terminal, renovated historic building (250 passengers / hr), a temporary reverse terminal (1000 passengers/hr).
